Apple Journal ships with iOS, costs nothing, and is the obvious first stop for anyone who wants to start journaling on an iPhone. absorvia is a paid alternative that does a different job.

What Apple Journal is for
Apple presents Journal as a place to record and reflect on everyday moments. It draws suggestions from activity on your device, such as photos, music and workouts, and offers them as starting points for an entry.
It is free, it is already installed, and it is well made. For capturing a day with the things you did in it, that is a strong combination.
What absorvia is for
absorvia is for the thought that has no photo attached. You write a sentence and one line comes back, called an Echo, showing the part you had not quite said.
Over days, Today's Pulse holds yesterday in a sentence. Over weeks, Undercurrent reads the tensions and shifts across everything you wrote.
Where they differ
- The trigger: Apple Journal suggests from your activity. absorvia waits for a thought you already have.
- What comes back: Apple Journal keeps the entry. absorvia returns a line and, over weeks, patterns.
- Unit of writing: an entry about a moment, versus a thought that is often one sentence.
- Price: Apple Journal is free. absorvia is free to start with a paid tier.
- Data: both keep writing on the device. Check each app's current settings for sync and backup behaviour.
Who should pick which
Pick Apple Journal if you want a free, well-integrated record of your days, prompted by what you actually did. Pick absorvia if the thing you want to write about is a thought rather than an event.
Using both is reasonable. One holds the day. The other reads the thinking.
Privacy and cost
Your thought library stays on your iPhone. There is no account and no cloud copy. Reflection is off until you turn it on. When it is on, only the thought you choose is sent to the absorvia server and to OpenAI, and that text is not used to train OpenAI's models. You can switch it off any time in Settings.
absorvia is free to start. Capture and organise without paying. Premium unlocks daily depth, deeper pattern surfacing, and Sit With It. It is a monthly or annual subscription. The annual plan begins with a 14-day free trial. Prices are shown in the app and on the App Store page.
Questions
Why pay when Apple Journal is free?
Only if you want something Apple Journal does not do: a line back on each thought and patterns read across weeks. As a place to record a day, the free app is excellent.
Does absorvia use Apple's journaling suggestions?
No. absorvia has no access to your photos, music or activity. It works only from the words you type.
Can I use both?
Yes. They do not overlap much. Many people keep a record in one place and think in another.
Does absorvia sync like Apple's apps?
No. There is no account and no sync. The library stays on one iPhone.
Try it. Write one thought and see what comes back.
